Formed in 1972, the Blofield and District Gardening Club first met in Blofield School and, as membership increased, moved to its present venue, the Margaret Harker Hall. The club draws members from several surrounding villages as well as from Blofield. It is organised and run by its present chairman and hard-working committee. It meets on the second Wednesday of each month, except in January, February, August and December. Speakers give talks and demonstrations on various subjects connected with gardening.
In July each year the club stages the Annual Show. This is always an enjoyable afternoon with various stalls and refreshments. Members enter competition classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, flower arranging and cookery. Trophies are awarded to winners in the various classes and for the overall total of highest points. An auction of show produce comes at the end of the afternoon.
The first meeting of the year, the Annual General Meeting, is held in March in the Margaret Harker Hall. It is followed by refreshments, giving an opportunity for members to catch up with friends after the winter break.
Discounts on the purchase of plants, and sometimes on other garden related items, are available from several local nurseries and shops on production of a current membership card.
Membership is currently £8 per annum. Visitors, who are always welcome, are charged a small entrance fee of £2.50. If you have an interest in gardening then why not try one our monthly meetings.
